Probability distributions and how they are related
Click a tile to open its page, or an arrow’s label to read how two distributions are related. A list version is below the map.
About this site and the map
This site is an interactive reference for the probability distributions used most in statistics and computational modeling, and for the relationships between them. Each distribution has its own page with an interactive plot, its formulas, its properties and its uses.
The map starts with the core distributions: the 15 distributions of the chart this map is based on, and the relationships between them. Choose “Full set of distributions” above the map to see all of them. On the map, each tile is a distribution with a small sketch of its shape; point at a tile (or move to it with the Tab key) to read what it is and what it is most often used for, and click it to open its page. Each arrow is a relationship, such as a special case, a limit or a transformation, and its label gives the key step as a short formula. Click an arrow or its label to read an explanation. Drag to move the map, and use the buttons in its corner to zoom; on a phone, pinch to zoom. The “Legend and filters” button on the map explains the line styles and shows or hides each kind of arrow.
